Greetings to the Good Gentles of the Shire,

First, Vivats!! to Lady Susanna on her Maunche (or Manche...believe it
or not there was discussion at Curia on the correct spelling) and Lord
Tomaloc for being recognized as a member of the Archery Champions at
Pennsic War XXXV!!!! It is thrilling to see the talents and
accomplishments of the members of the Shire recognized.

Please keep in mind that recommendations for any award can be
submitted by any one. You do not need to have the award yourself to
make a recommendation. By the way, on the website of TRH Lucan and
Yana, there is a drop down choice for submitting a recommendation.

Swamp Thynge is fast approaching and I encourage all to participate
and spread the word in some manner. In addition to our ever popular
and growing archery opportunities, this year will have a Heavy Weapons
Tourney to determine a Shire Champion. ALL fighters, regardless of
where they live, may participate, but only the highest ranking
resident Shire Fighter may hold the title (please see Lord Krey's
previous post for more details).

Additionally, there will be A & S classes and an A & S Populace
Display. There are some great prizes for the winners! Please enter
your own display (finished or work in progress) and encourage all
others to do so as well.

The next event following Swamp Thynge will be the Red Hat Society Demo
on Sunday, October 15. Mark your calendars!!! We will need as many
people from the Shire as possible to participate as well as our
friends from other Shires and Baronies....there is an estimated 300
ladies who may attend and all hands are needed to ensure a good time
for all. Fighters, Fencers, A & S talents, merchants, etc., are all
encouraged to attend. A Ransom Tourney for the Fighters is being
planned (and fencers as well if they attend) which should be fun!!!
The question has been presented to the park regarding a demo archery
range and once an answer is confirmed, it will be posted. Please
encourage one and all to attend!!! The dayboard is limited to the
first 50 SCA participants (then there is the 300 ladies!). Information
regarding the demo is posted on the EK website:

The next Shire Meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 19 at 7 p.m.
Location: 104 N. Main St., St. Georges, Delaware. Directions will be
posted at a later date. Refreshments will be available.

And last but not least, a reminder that Letters of Intent for Officers
of the Shire, will be due to me no later than the next Shire Meeting
on October 17 at 6:59 p.m. Once the meeting starts they can no longer
be accepted. Please include a copy of your valid membership card (or
Pikestaff). Candidates will be announced at the meeting and posted in
the Fort Knights. Voting will take place at the November 21 Shire
Meeting. Proxy ballots will be available with the Fort Knights as
well. More information to follow as time approaches.

OH! THIS is the last item...our own David Pollack, a figher within
our fair Shire, is the Sous Chef at Caffe Gelato (302-738-5811) in
Newark. He has put together the menu for the Medieval Wine Dinner on
November 5 (seatings at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.); $48.99 per person,
gratuity not included. Reservations are required. I spoke to the
owner yesterday when I made my reservations and he doesn't mind at all
if we attend in garb.

App: Herb and onion fritters topped with candied orange peels served
with sauteed calamari, sliced almonds, toasted pinenuts and red currants
Soup: barley vegetable and duck confit
Salad: Baby Mache lettuce, mizuna and Arugula tossed with mint, basil,
fennel, oregano, extra virgin olive oil and aged balsamic vinegar
Intermezzo: Lime sorbet
Entree: Roasted rack of lamb with sauteed quinces, served with braised
cabbage, fennel and apples, accompanied with basmati and goat cheese
stuffed grape leaf
Dessert: Honey and almond sweetend ricotta with carmalized figs

And with that sweet ending I remain...

Yours in Service,

Baroness Valentina Barrows
Seneschal
