Baroness Jocelyn,
Your post inquired what the populace thought. We were waiting to see what
the populace thought. The issue was going to be addressed once there were
more posts to address. The thinking was to reply to all at once, rather than
repeat the same thing over and over. However, it seems that the majority of
the populace do not feel the same as you, as there has not been an
overwhelming support of your statements thus far. We were merely
waiting. Further,
Baroness Valentina, the Shire Seneschal, posted more than once on the
populace and yahoo lists that she would be out of town from 11/16 - 20 and
without email access. This would explain why you haven't heard from her. She
also clearly mentioned if anyone had issues to please contact her by phone
and repeatedly provided her phone number which is also available on the
Shire's Officer page.
I do have unobstructed doors (what does barrier free mean?), 4 small steps
into my home, and a first floor bathroom. I have a driveway and entire
street in front of my house to park on, though I do have a lawn you may have
to walk around. As a point I'd like to add, the Handicapped Parking Spaces
at most public places are often NOT the closest to the doors. You can't
expect close parking.
The Officers were of the belief that if someone in our Shire had a
disability to speak of, that person would take the time to contact the
Seneschal so that adequate arrangements could be made for accommodations. I
have been in contact with Baroness Valentina via phone and she was quite
surprised to hear of this issue as she had not been contacted. For the
record, neither had I or Lady Veronica. As there are precious few locations
where our Shire can hold our monthly Business meetings, we are adhering to
the Accessibility portion of Corpora in that we are doing whatever possibly
can be done. As an aside, private homes are exempt from the requirements in
the Americans with Disabilities Act, and it is our belief that the
Accessibility section of Corpora (referenced below) applies to SCA, Inc. and
events, not every single local gathering/meeting. If it applies to every
single meeting and gathering, then we would no longer be able to use anyones
home for anything, to include the A&S nights, the Gathering of Friends,
Fighter Practices, and the Trivial Thursdays. This can not only apply to
certain activities. It must be an all or none deal.
In response to your issue of allergies, I have benadryl, you're welcome to
take some when you get here, as is anyone else who wishes to. If you can't
take benadryl, I'd be willing to go to the Walmart to get Claritin, or
something. Again, it has been known for easily two weeks that I had cats. I
posted that information early enough that issues could be taken care of well
in advance. Additionally, allergies are not covered under the Americans with
Disabilities Act.
It does no good to insist on a new meeting location due to circumstances no
one but you were aware of, without you at least offering a potential new
location.
After clarification and review of the Corpora (Section XIII of the Corporate
Policies of the Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc., page 61 of 64 of the
.pdf file located at http://www.sca.org/docs/govdocs.pdf) and review of the
Americans with Disabilities Act, it has been decided that the Shire meeting
will be held on November 21, 2006, at 7:00 pm, in my residence in Magnolia,
unless you find a suitable, free, central, and pet free location in the
meantime, and provide appropriate information on location, including
directions and a contact for people to call if they get lost. Due to time
constraints, I would suggest this be done before Monday morning, to afford
all interested parties ample time to make additional arrangements if need
be. Further, if you are unable to attend for any reason, it is completely
acceptable for you to submit the proxy ballots that were previously
addressed on this and the populace lists.
By the way, as far as pets go, remember that horses, dogs, goats, chickens
and pot-bellied pigs aren't acceptable if cats aren't.
